TRAVEL NEWS

If you are planning to travel to one of several European countries in 2024, you will likely need a new visa-type document to travel. Starting next year, travelers will need to be authorized by the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to enter any of the following countries:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland

Acquiring the authorization will allow you to stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and you can go as often as you like. You will still need to show your passport and any other necessary documents to enter the country. It’s an electronic verification that is linked to your passport and can only be applied for online.

This new process has been in the works for several years, so once it’s confirmed, there will be both a website and mobile app to start your application. They will be able to be processed anywhere from within minutes to 30 days, depending if you need to submit additional information or have to schedule an interview.

Luckily, the cost is low – just 7 Euros (which is approximately $8 in the US). Once approved, you will get an email confirming your status and it will be linked to your passport. This ETIAS document will be valid for three years – or until your passport expires (if that happens before the ETIAS document expiration). If you are denied, you will have a chance to appeal.

At Catholic Charities of California, we strive to work proactively to make your journey as easy as possible. Therefore, we will continue to follow this development, and will update you when there is more information.

If you have questions, you can visit the ETIAS website here: https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias_en.

“I had never taken a walking trip like that where you walk 10 miles a day and the walking was pretty fantastic!”

— Dean, The Camino de Santiago
